Dr. Alan J. Mushnick

“I like solving problems. I have an analytical mind, and I like taking information and scientific findings, putting them into context of a patient’s real life and finding a resolution. This is part of why I enjoy gastroenterology after more than 20 years, but only a part. The fact is that there is much more to gastrointestinal care. The purpose is to help people feel better and have a better quality of life. This requires not just knowledge and skill but also sympathy, empathy, compassion and personal dedication.

“My decades of experience in digestive medicine have taught me many things: technical skill, detailed understanding of the disorders and their subtle nuances and which treatments will be most effective in particular circumstances. Yet, they have also taught me to be sensitive to the human aspects of gastrointestinal problems. The people I see are not sick because of their own actions. They don’t wish to be sick. They don’t want to miss work. And they don’t want to endure their symptoms. I can personally relate to these sentiments, and it helps keep me focused on the goal: relieve their symptoms and help them resume the life they love.”

Dr. Alan Mushnick received his B.S. degree from Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., and his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine.
